Obituary for Thelma Loraine Wiste

Thelma Loraine Wiste died peacefully at her home on Wednesday, March 13, 2019. She was under the care of Black River Hospice.

Thelma was born on January 8, 1940 in Havre, Montana to Pastor Thomas and Eva Boe, the second of four children. She lived in Montana, Iowa, Minnesota, California, Nevada, Missouri and Black River Falls. As a girl in Lake Mills, Iowa she took piano and organ lessons, developing her lifelong love of church organ and choral music. She majored in Nursing at St. Olaf College and graduated with a BSN in 1962. St. Olaf was also where she met her future husband, Roger Wiste.

After graduation, Thelma worked as a surgical nurse at the VA hospital in Minneapolis. She married Roger in 1964 and spent the next four years as a naval officer’s wife in California and Nevada. Their first son, Mark, was born in 1966. They left the Navy in 1967 when Roger attended graduate school in Columbia, Missouri. After graduate school, they moved to LeSueur, Minnesota. Their second son, Timothy, was born there in 1969.

Thelma was a busy young mother, active as a church choir member and a Jaycee wife. They moved to BRF in late 1975. After both boys were in school, Thelma took a refresher course in nursing and entered the field of long-term care. She worked for a short time at Family Heritage, and then found her job at Pine View Nursing home where she became the evening head nurse. She retired from Pine View in 2005 after 25 years of service.

She was a caregiver to many, nursing many friends and family through illness and death. Thelma also continued her interest in music. She sang Alto in the Senior Choir at Evangelical Lutheran and took organ lessons in Eau Claire. She played the Cassavant Pipe Organ at ELC for many weddings, funerals and services until her retirement. She was a charter member of the local Sweet Adelines Chorus, a member of the Tuesday Club, and a member of the Karner Blue Garden Club. Thelma and Roger are blessed with two great sons, Mark and Tim and their wonderful daughters-in-law Laura and Marla. They also have two beautiful granddaughters, Isabelle and Noelle. Thelma has especially enjoyed visits from their German Rotary daughter, Michelle Charbonnier and visiting her multiple times in Germany.

Thelma is survived by her husband of 54 years, Roger; her sons Mark (Laura) of Onalaska, Wi; Tim (Marla), granddaughters Isabelle and Noelle of Hudson, Wi; sister Lynn (Ben) Graham; sister Kirsten Boe; sisters-in law Karen (John) Boe, Reba (Richard) Johnson, Peggy (Ron) Wiste and Roberta (William) Johnson. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Eva Boe; older brother John Boe and brother-in-law, Ron Wiste.

Visitation will be held Sunday, March 24th from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Torgerson’s Funeral Home in BRF. Funeral/Celebration of Life Service will be held on Monday, March 25 at 11:00 a.m. at Evangelical Lutheran Church in BRF.
